ceiling fan wiring

Hi

I broke the pull chain on my 3 speed ceiling fan.

I got the new switch, but when removing the old switch I didn't note which position (L, 1, 2, 3) each wire was in.

Can someone help me?

I have two black wires...one coming from the switch which determines which direction the fan rotates and one that comes down from higher in the ceiling. I also have a red and yellow wire that come out of a little electrical box that I figure deterimes fan speed.

Is there any industry standard as to what would go where?

Any help would be much appreciated.
