I purchased a new 07 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited a few months ago to pull behind my motorhome. I must say this is one of the finest vehicles I have ever had the pleasure of driving. It pulls like a breeze and is a joy to use.
My question - I was talking with a Jeep owner about wanting to do something to keep the steering wheel from locking when I take the key out and try to pull it down the road and he suggested I talk with the dealer about removing a spring in the steering column and that would stop my problem. He claimed a friend of his had it done for a cost of about $30 at the dealership and now it will pull without leaving the key in the ignition.

Also he said this does not void the warranty and is not a requirement anywhere except California for safety reasons.

Does anybody know what I can do?? I talked with my dealer and they said they didnt know what I was talking about.

to be honest... i dont have any experience in doing this. there is a spring lock in the steering column.... and anything mechanical can usually be disabled.

short of leaving a key in the unlocked position just before "ON"... no.. i'd have to look into that one myself. if it were me, i'd ask the buddy which dealership he used. reason being is that what one may consider "ok", another may not. it's like that with dealerships. many of us have found out the hard way.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the guy I was talking to about this was overnighting in a Walmart parking lot and on his way to a Good Sam Rally. I did not get his name so I dont know who I should talk to about it.

well, then i would resort to speaking directly to the head mechanics at a couple of dealerships. unless you are skilled with a wrench and confident to remove the cover of the steering column and inspecting the guts.
