I got my new '08 6 speed and want to switch out the shifter knob but no one (including the Jeep Acc. store owner) can figure out how to get off the factory knob. Help?

welcome to the fourm
i'd love to help... but i got an auto. smile.gif

i'd think it should spin off... they usually put a compund on it like loc-tite, so theyre extremely difficult to remove.

Not sure about the new body style, but on my 05, you just have to use a very small flat tip screwdriver and carefully pry the center cap off the knob. Once the center cap is removed, there is a screw inside the knob that, once loosened, will allow the know to come off.

problem is we are all scared to reef on it hard enough to break the lock tite. I would just like to be assured by someone who knows for sure that that is what we should do.

i'd ask the service dpt at the dealer. they should be able to tell you. may take a few minutes for them to look it up....

from what I've read, all you so is pull up really really hard and it pops off. Another method is using a cresant wrench and a hammer. Adj. the wrench to a size of the bottom of the nob and tap from the bottom with a hammer and it will eventually pop off. HTH

It pulls straight off. Not very easy though.
Pull up real hard & wiggle it as you pull.
I installed a 1in. body lift on mine, then it would not go into 2nd, 4th, 6th, or reverse, so i had to remove the knob to get the inner boot off.
Once you remove it, you'll find that the top of the shaft is flat on one side.
I think i'm going to weld a piece to the top to make it longer, with threads.

The wrench & hammer would work real also.
