I have been mulling over different brands of cold air intakes for my 08 4-door JK. I already have an Airaid throttlebody spacer and have noticed a small difference in response. I am looking at the AEM brute force and also the Airaid version (wondered if this would work better with throttlebody spacer of same make or if mattered) . Banks does not make one that I can see. Also looked at True Flow XDI and AfE. They all have claims of hpwr and torque and I don't know which would be best. I am looking for better performance without sacrificing mpg and gains would be nice and like the cleanable filters some offer. Thanks for any and all input.

welcome to the forum.

if you dont have a subscription to JP Magazine, try to catch one at the local book shop or Wal-Mart. the issue with the Top 10 Power Adders... top crate engine swaps, etc... there is an article comparing several intakes including those you mentioned and several others. the test is on a 4.0 TJ Wrangler, but the point is still the same.

in the end, the spread on them isnt all that much. i think that the primary aspect and concern is that the intake fits your needs. i recommend having one with a good splash/heat shield. a good reusable cone filter. personally, i prefer a smooth intake inlet. having one with two or three tapers or connections tends to introduce turbulence into the intake air.

again... opinion...
I have a K&N intake. it does cause the intake pulses of the engine to become intense and more audible, but not to the point that I can't stand it. I have heard people that are pleased with their intakes.... and to be honest, I can't think of anyone who has been unhappy.

in the end I doubt that the performance will differ much between them.. anywhere up to maybe 5hp max.

Depends exactly what you are trying to acheive with a "cold air" intake.

Do you drive your Jeep in water? The open element invites hydrolock.

Do you plan to install a "free-er" flowing exhaust to allow the engine to get the exhaust out?

Personally, I did not see a measurable increase in HP when I installed mine in my YJ with the 4.0L. I had to do it because I installed aftermarket tube fenders. Stock box did not fit. I don't do any water/mud runs, so hydorlock isn't a concern for me. I just didn't want to spend the $200+ for the "upgrade". The stock airbox is find IMHO. If you want a "washable" filter, why don't you just get the KN or whatever that drops into the stock airbox?

I purchased the Airaid kit to fit with my tube fenders. Nice kit.

I also had to replace the back end of my exhaust (trail damage) to the tune of $200 or so. Used a Flowmaster 40 series. Also had to replace the header (due to the famous 4.0L header cracks) for another $300. Bought the JBA header. Good stuff. Bolted right up without a problem. Oh, and the cat puked a few years ago.... I have one of the "house" brand Hi Flow converters.

So I have an Airaid intake, JBA headers, a hi flow cat and a flowmaster 40 series muffler.

What have I noticed? Not much. I do feel I have better throttle response and it does sound better than stock IMHO....But I don't believe I see or feel any "measureable" HP or torque gains.

Mileage? Naaaaa. I'm driving a Jeep with 35" tires and 5" + of lift. Mileage is not a "measureable" thing.

On my street truck (2001 F150, 5.4L) I have the drop in KN filter with a Flowmaster 50 DF muffler. I "think" I get a little better mileage. I believe I have better throttle response with the setup. And I like the way it sounds. I did it more for the sound than anything else.

My $0.02 - spend your money elsewhere. Don't think you will see any "measureable" increase.

I have a AirForce One cold air intake and a Jet stage one performance chip and it made a big difference. My only complaint with my intake is I get a whislte when I'm running between 1500 and 2000 RPM and give it a little gas. When I jump on it it sounds great though.

All "wet" intake filters allow more dust/dirt into the intake...IMO

Thanks for all the opinions and good advice. I don't plan on any deep water runs so I should be ok. I would like the sound difference and I think I just like to buy things for my jeep!

I was wondering, when you add the jet chip or the unichip does it void any warranties? also, I think there are two types of Jet chips, one for "moderately" modified vehicles and one for off road extreme. Which did you use?
thanks

Stage 1 for regular fuel
Stage 2 for premium

I have heard good things about the Jet chips. I have been weighing the choice on a Jet chip or a new Hypertech programmer which is out now, but going through a faze-in period. If it does not and WILL not come with the ability to adjust the tranny shift and torque converter lockup, I'm gonna get a stage 1 chip.

As noise goes, I think Jim has the Airraid and he said it wasnt that loud. Mine is, though. He said he could hear me accellerating behind him. :D

Hey Stronwind,

Can you post more pictures of your jeep?

Also, does jet chip void any warranties?

i cant imagine the chip voiding a warranty... however, you could always remive it before a dealer visit. ;) it not a permanent installation.

I went to a pepboys and found a 2" cone filter from Spectere. I just removed the entire airbox and hose all the way up to the throttle body. Then I just put the filter right on the throttle body. The filter is shorter than the hose was so clearance wasn't an issue. It really woke my 4.0 up and I have a similar setup on my sportscar. The filter only cost me $20 and took 5 minutes to install. plus the filters are reuseable. I just have to cover the filter with a plastic bag when i work on the engine in the rain.

Jet claims it does not void the warranty but last time I took my Jeep in to the dealer I took the chip off just in case. Also I was a little worried about theft. It would only take a second to steal it if you didn't take the time to unhook the battery. And I just got the stage one because for now I'm only doing the intake and exhaust. StrongWind, nice Jeep.
