While on vacation my wife's uncle gave me a couple of no name lights
they're 100watt halogens.
I wanna know how bright these things are? Can I use them as driving lights or should I use them off road only. My headlights aren't the greatest by todays standards and I'd like to mount them on the bumper and use them for on-road but I don't wanna be one of those *******s that blinds you from the other lane. If I can only use them off road I'm thinking of making a couple of brackets and mounting them to the windshield hinge.

The lights will reflect off your hood and it will be very bright and you lose your "night eyes"

ok, I was thinking that you were implying that I didn't know which way to point the light :)
I could probably make a reflector for the bottom side to limit that....I can't think of another good place to put them....I'm thinking that they won't last long on my bumper and I don't think I'll clear the garage door if I put them on top.

As always, check with your local laws. A co-worker was pulled over and ticketed for driving with 6 lights when the law states 4 is the maximum.

I've only got 2 headlights now so it'll only be 4 if I use them at all on-road.

Colorado law might differ from other states.. like Michigan. ;)

100w is definitely too bright for a driving/fog light on road

Thats not true at all. I have 150watt Daylighters on my front bumper and use them all the time at night. It's like driving during the day. Just turn them off when cars are approaching.

Well of course, you could have 45 lights on the road and as long as cars arent approaching, you are fine. You could put those 100watt lights on, ive got some, and just use em like a high beam. Mine help when going around windy roads. hit em when i need some more light, off when i see cars approaching.

Having to turn them off when a car approaches would mean that they are too bright to me...
I don't think that would swing in NJ.

You are ok, until you pass that cop with them on......Check your laws. These lights are almost definately not DOT approved and are therefore illegal for on road use. Many states even require that they be kept covered on road and you will get a ticket if they are uncovered.

In most states 55watts is the limit for on-road use. Some states even require you cover you off-road lights at all times while on the roadway.

Not in Colorado...;)

How? Just make sure they arent the first point of contact. Make them an inch or so behind the front bumper and you shouldnt have any problems. And if you do, they were free!!

Just curious, can't really see whats goin on up there, just know I'm always pulling twigs outta the grill and didn't know if it's common for bumper lights to be sacrificed alot.
