View Full Version : i need help deciding...

so im about due for another decent modification. i cant decide what i want to get. i kno that a D44 will come once i can find one that i want. so i can basically check that off my list. i dont really do alot of heavy wheeling so i dont need much hardcore stuff.
im thinking about a winch or a cage. unfortunately i am a poor college student so i cant do both right now. i like the idea of a cage because i am so noob that i could easily see myself flipping over quite often. plus cages add cosmetic coolness points. it would also b a really fun weekend project.
on the other hand, a winch is extremely useful in many situations. but would i really get alot of use out of it since i dont really go wheeling all that often? plus a winch, plate, and accessories are 2x more expensive than a cage. is it worth the cost for me?
i cant decide.

Save your money and run the Jeep as is. When you graduate and can actually afford to waste cash on a pavement pounder do your mods then. IMO
Since you are a poor college student you are probably going to use a credit card to pay for the mods....don't do it.
With the rising cost of fuel you'd be better off to divert "mod money" to fuel expense so you can afford to drive your Jeep whenever you want.

yes i will b using a credit card but i hav already saved up more than enough money for my next mod and gas for the rest of the summer. i dont use my credit card unless i already hav the cash in hand to pay it off immediately. i plan ahead so i dont go in debt. i wouldnt even think about modifying the jeep if i couldnt afford it. i just cant mod as much as id like cuz i am in college.
if i got a winch, that would b all i could get. but if i go the cage route, i think i could get a couple small things along with it. maybe a steering stabilizer, t-case drop, or sumthin else small that doesnt impact performance alot but is nice to hav.

Get an SYE, cage and some armor...
forgive me for being noob, but what are the benefits of SYE? ive heard alot about them.
i think i am going to go the armor route. i think a cage is a good idea. i can wait for a winch. maybe i can get one by the end of the summer. is diff armor worth it? as usual i like to stretch money as far as i can so im looking for something cheap yet decent quality. i dont need anything crazy good; just sumthing that can take an occassional rock or 2.

Rocker guards are always a good investment. A solid cage is also a good purchase.

Get the cage, and if you have extra cash tie it into your frame. I've been wheeling for a couple of years and have yet to be in a situation where a trusted friend and a tow strap couldnt get me out of. I havn't flopped mine yet but i will definately buy a cage before i start lookin for a winch. AtoZ fab has some great looking cage add ons. Just make sure you can weld really good or take it to a professional to do it for you. Better safe than sorry

i think i am gonna go with the poison spyder trail cage, but i think i mite get that rear spreader from AtoZ. i am an ASE certified welder. im very confident in my welding ability.

actually i hav another question. i really want to try to keep my existing sound bar. how can i put in a rear spreader while still retaining the sound bar? would it b a waste (structurally) if i bent some tubing to connect to the B-pillar crossbar but hav it bend under the soundbar? does that make sense? idk...maybe i will just hav to figure sumthin out wen i get all the pieces. i just dont want to do a ton of welding and then find out that my plan is not structurally sound.

ok so i sent an email to northridge4x4 and they sed that poison spyder is backed up so its gonna take almost 2 months for the trail cage to get shipped. lame sauce. ive budgeted for about $400 dollars to spend on mods (including shipping, giv or take a few bucks). now that the cage isnt really an option, i was thinkin i could get the AtoZ rocker guards and quick discos. maybe a t-case drop or steering stabilizer.
is that a good way to spend $400?
do any of u guys hav pics of the AtoZ rocker guards on yur rigs?

I have come to this thread a little late, and without spending the time reading every post, I will add my two cents. What I am about to type has probably been said at least once, so here goes.
As a "poor college student" I suggest that you not mod your Jeep until such time as your bills are paid for, including student loans. Wheel lightly and with some common sense and you should be fine. That money right now is better spent on gas, pizza and beer.
When you decide to get more serious about wheeling (more than scooting around on the beach or jetting down some dirt road), get a cage. Nothing less than one that ties into the frame. Anything else is cosmetic.
After that, your wheeling style will dictate what you need more than anything else.
Safety should be the first thing on your mind. If your brain bucket gets a crack in it, no amount of winches, rocker guards, subwoofers, and PS2's in the glovebox will mean much.

i agree completely. now hear out my situation. i hav a good job that provides me with more than enough money to support my hobbies. i am fortunate enough to hav very generous parents that hav paid for my complete education in full. i do not plan on wasting any of their hard earned money, therefore i do good in school and pay for all my own bills.
i work very hard cuz that is how i was raised and i play hard, but i dont hav a "beer and pizza" bill.
now for my wheeling situation. i do go to offroad parks about once a month along with hitting local spots every other weekend. i hav plenty of common sense and i tread very lightly. ive been lucky enough to hav broken very little on my jeep. i hav the money to modify and modifying my jeep is something i enjoy doing.
(this is NOT directed at u Jason Clark) i understand that most people on this board hav been jeeping longer than i hav been alive but that is y i come here for help. im kinda dissapointed that i get ripped on for how i spell things. i dont mean to b a jerk but if my typing bothers u so much, then by no means r u obligated to reply to or even read my posts. i ask questions simply because i am interested in learning. everyone has to start somewhere and hopefully by the end of my jeeping career i will retain even half of what some of u guys know.
if u honestly feel its necessary to giv me a "forced vacation" because of my typing habits, please do so. i will probly still return with more jeep questions. :D

My post is not about how long you have been wheeling. It is about typing something that people want to try to help you with. Also, unfortunately, being a moderator I have to read all of the posts. Even childish text message type crap like yours. But if you can't speak/type in a way that I can easily understand then why would I share my wealth of Jeep info with you? What do your college professors think of your writing style?

im sorry u hav to read my childish posts. i cant speak for everyone, but i would guess that most people on this board can understand what i type; maybe im wrong. ok so i dont capitalize an "i" or put an E on "have"...big deal. at least i dont type w1th l3tt3rz 'n #'s 'n 5ymb0lz. i just type what comes easiest and most natural to me. im not saying its right and im not saying its wrong.
now to answer your questions:
"...why would I share my wealth of Jeep info with you?"
u dont hav to if u dont want to. u hav the right to not say a single word to me if that is what u so desire. its unfortunate for me because u probly kno alot more about jeeps than i do. im here to learn and make some friends with a common interest. i hope u can look past my childish style of typing.
"What do your college professors think of your writing style?"
obviously i write final drafts with grammatical precision.
*** Cromwell, thank you for the pictures. i appreciate it. ***
