View Full Version : How should I help 4point0?
I've been giving quite a bit of thought to how I should go about help this poor unfortunate young man with his hideous grammar and spelling. Whether it is on purpose, just being lazy, or he just doesn't care, I feel he needs help and I would like to help him. What I need is suggestions on the best way to help him realize the error of his ways.
Things considered so far:
1.) Edit each of his posts and correct the spelling/grammatical wrong-doings.
2.) Edit each of his posts and remove the spelling/grammatical wrong-doings.
3.) Delete each post containng unacceptable spelling/grammar.
4.) Temporary ban. (for being too lazy to communicate in an adult manner)
Please help me help this young man.

I vote for either 3 or another option. Edit each of his posts to say something silly. Maybe then he will take care to pay attention to what he is writing.

i think he's an ok guy. i read most of his stuff, and it has depth...just his typing style is a bit off.
i suggest he should respect the board and type out entire words. his grammer is not so bad, just the spelling.
4point0, just type it out bro! no one was trying to bust your chops unit you offered to be kicked off! stick around! its not that hard to type that extra letter! all these guys are asking is for a little respect!

My $0.02….
When ANYONE posts up a question with bad spelling/grammar/poor description of the problem/issue, I typically choose to ignore the question. If the “poster” doesn’t have the patience or time to “speak clearly” to describe the problem (just plain LAZY IMHO), why should I take the time to provide a response? Most of the time I could give a good answer or something to try, but they will never get from me with a poorly written question. Have a little respect for members of the board….
My position, I choose to IGNORE the lazy, poorly posted questions regardless of who the “poster” is…

I'm with StrongWind. Paul, do you really want to invest the time to do 1, 2, or 3? If so, why haven't the same things been done for countless members on this forum in the past?
I'll admit that poor grammar, spelling, etc. bugs me as well, but I know I don't have the time/patience to go into each post and tweak them. It's sad that someone is too lazy to properly convey their thoughts into an online forum, though.

Please help me help this young man.
As always Paul, you show your wisdom that makes you such an asset to members of this board.
If 4point0 is reasonably intelligent (and I think he is, by what I've seen of him) he'll recognize that he's not being bashed, or made fun of. But rather than that, there are "old-timers" that appreciate his involvement & willingness to learn the finer points of Jeep ownership. After all, the younger guys are the replacements for us old farts.
So in exchange for our knowledge & willingness to help, I think that the younger guys can indulge us a bit with our insistence on "old school" fondness for good grammar.
Thanks for hearing me out.

I thought about it quite a bit before deciding to invest the time in this young man. Finally I decided I wanted to help. Sooner or later in life he needs to understand that his way of communicating in writing makes him look bad. It is possible I could help him learn something that will enable him to represent himself better and therefore provide opportunities he might not otherwise have. If I were an employer I would not want someone who writes that poorly representing my company to its customers.
As far as past members, we have helped some. What I feel is different about 4point0 is he chooses to write poorly which is very different from unintentional spelling/grammar errors. What he is doing is not an error, he is purposely representing himself in a lazy and disrespectful way. As if he feels we are not worth his trouble to communicate well. My feeling is if he wants to benefit from our knowledge he should show us some respect.

The way I look at it is we are (with a few exceptions) adults having an adult conversation, not texting our girlfriends on blueberries.
Write (type) it the way you would if you are filling out an application or resume.

I completely agree that any/all users of forums should use proper grammar and spelling as much as possible. I'd just assume that if enough people point out a poster's general bad typing, that they'll work on it if they care. If they don't care enough to correct it, then there's no need to reply to that person.
I have had people on my ignore lists from other forums just because I can't for the life of me decipher what they're trying to say. Those people get a lot less answers to their questions from the general forum members as a result of their poorly worded posts.
If you have the time to constantly monitor/edit/delete this guy's posts, then knock yourself out

When I send text messages from my cell phone I do not use the common slang or abreviations. I feel each person I send messages to deserves the entire word, not some butchered version of our language.

In a quick text, I usually spell the whole word out, since my BB does it automatically when I hit the keys. Posting on a board like this, how hard is it to type an "e" at the end of a word or hit "shift" every once in a while?
Maybe a typing course is in order? I can't type, but I have my own technique which I can type pretty fast with.
Not to mention, this new BB has a spell checker built in.....

Have you been editing his posts or have I not been paying attention?
I've not noticed his posts being any more grammatically incorrect than some other guys on here.
More to the point on you question, I would say give him some help, there are all sorts of stuff online to improve your typing/writing ability. Not too many people respond well to being pushed out of a group...even temporarily, Hell we let Texas stay!!
Also we should all take it upon ourselves to help if we can by showing him what he's doing wrong when we can. Don't let it fall on one person to do something

Yes, lets ban him for poor grammer/typing skills. Then maybe we can start banning some of these guys that are so sarcastic. After that maybe we can stop all those terrible "which size body lift" questions. I agree it's a little un-called for but who don't understand what he is saying? If your offended, don't answer. If we are all adults here having an adult conversation, then why does this thread generate more responses than a legitimate question about how to remove your doors off as Jeep. Some fruitcake from Texas can start a thread with a picture of a Jeep so far in the background you can't even tell what it is but it generates pages of responses, but a legitimate question about putting a 4.0 head on a 4.2 don't even get answered.

Dave, I'm not saying we should ban him for poor grammar. If we did that this would be a very lonely place and even I would not be one of the very few members left. However, it has been pointed out to him several times that this is not text messaging and we would like to see a more mature aproach to our BB. He has chosen to ignore our requests by purposely using bad spelling and grammar. I would prefer to help educate him rather than toss him aside.
Also, keep in mind this is the Off Topic forum where discussion of Texas4x4 and his many exploits, or an in depth discussion of spelling and grammar are acceptable. And as I'm sure you can understand, these subjects will create more controversy than how to take off a set of doors.
It's "Doesn't". :D :D :p ;)

I am the same way when I text, but I have even heard of some schools allowing the text shorthand to pass as an answer to a spelling test. I hope that this is false information, but just what I have heard.
It is a new generation whether we like it or not. I for one don't.
If I were an employer I would not want someone who writes that poorly representing my company to its customers.
You talk like you know that he writes this way in his professional life as well.
I'm not defending him or endorsing your ideas as well. I haven't given it as much thought as you clearly have. Just making an observation here.

Well if it is a legitimate rule then he needs to be banned. And I do understand the part about the off topic forum but I just don't like to see so many rules and regs., that we lose the whole thing, you know the slippery slope thing. In a perfect world 4-0 would use better judgement and the Tex would stay on the MBLA board. Here I am now, two posts on this thread, I have become what I hated.

i didn't know that...neat! where is it?
It requires Internet Explorer 7 as well as downloading a plugin, IESpell, from Microsoft.
My Mac spell checks everything as I type it though, so I really don't have to worry no matter what program I'm using. It only gets a little distracting when coding HTML or C and having the spell checker tell me that "img src" or "printf" aren't real words.

I really don't think that I "fail to communicate in an adult manner". I do try to think out most of my posts with a bit of depth before I post them. Although at times I do have very noob questions, most everyone (to my understanding) can understand the message I try to convey. I just want everyone to know that I am not just some punk kid trying to get all the "old-timers" irate over how I spell words. I respect every person on this board until they have given me ample reason not to. From this point on I am willing to put more effort into my posts. Prior to being ripped on in my last thread, I had no idea that how I spelled a few words really bothered all of you.
But, when the next kid that types like me comes along don't come out of nowhere in one of his posts and say "Maybe I can do my part by giving him a forced vacation from the BB to study?". That came off a bit harsh to me. Maybe I just took it the wrong way. I'm sure that you didn't mean it to be harsh in any way. You don't have to take my advice...ever...but next time I would try to solve this kind of problem in a kind manner through PM's. I can't believe my situation became such a spectacle. By no means did I ever intend this topic to spin out of control like it did.
Are you guys satisfied? Can we get over this subject now? Are AtoZ rocker guards a good investment?
On a more serious note; If you really do still have a problem with me...please PM me and we can sort it out somehow.

4-0- I do not believe that anyone here thought you were a punk. You just found a board that is made up of mostly older people that did not like the "texting" spelling. It is very annoying to read if you are not used to it. Instead of just ignoring you, they chose to tell you about it so that you can get your questions answered. If they chose not to say anything, you would slowly get fed up with the board and eventually leave.
A to Z products are great!!! Zach was a member of this board long before quadratec sold his stuff. I am waiting for the funds to get a few things myself.
BTW- what gears are you running in your jeep?

Both the country and the language should be capitalized. Maybe they stopped teaching that in school and part of the dumbing down of society, not sure.
BTW, it is "specifically". ;)
Apart from these cases, capital letters are used at the beginning of the following types of words:
Names of people and places
Peter
Susan
Australia
Hyde Park
the Middle East
Nationalities and regions, languages, religions and ethnic groups
a German car
the Scandinavian countries
She speaks Russian and Chinese
a Muslim cleric
the Aboriginal people
