Hi

Am I crazy?

I just put on a flowmaster 50 single inlet dual outlet muffler into my dakota...it now seems to have noticeable more giddy-up that it did before when it had the stock muffler with single inlet and single outlet...and that's coming from someone where it would take a good chunk of extra hp before I would notice it...

That possible just from a muffler?

It was 2.5 inlet and 2.5 outlets...but I used the stock tailpipes from an early 90s F-150 with the 460 and dual exhaust...2 inch pipe...had a section between the muffler and tail pipe where I put in a section of 2.25 pipe adjusted to fit the 2.5" muffler outlets and the 2" tailpipe. Both dump to the side behind the rear passenger side tire

I was doing this mostly cuz the stock muffler had a hole in it and I wanted a little more rumbly sound.

I was a bit nervous that it would be too loud, waking my neighbors up when I leave the house...but it's actually really mild but has the underlying sound of a big V8.

Just sharing I guess...

yeah. i noticed mine had a lot more giddyup after i put the dual 50s on there

Your old muffler could have been clogged and causing your engine to not breath properly. So, yes, you could have "woke up" your truck sort of speak.

BTW: making it breath better from the back side could use some front side air as well. May want to consider a new intake and possibly doing a dyno tune so the new found air can mix with the proper ammount of fuel. It's really not that expensive and will wake up your engine...

JAFO is 100% correct. The biggest most free-flowing exhaust in the world is no good if air can't get into the engine. But the opposite is also true, taking in more air than the exhaust can put out gives it nowhere to go and boggs down an engine. Allowing enough air to come in and giving a way out will do more for an engine than any gimmicky add-on. You're half way there. Now finish the job.

Dyno tune is when they put the truck on a Dyno (measure HP/Torque). This is all computerized and good Dyno shops will tune everything to match. But, you shouldn't run a dyno tune until after you get all your accessories installed.

It's basically a computer and hopefully a very good tech telling your truck exactly how much fuel needs to be delivered along with the ammount of air currently being delivered. They flash a new computer for you with your new tune and your truck should run TOPS.

It's what all the good street racers do. But, it's really good for any rig with aftermarket exhause/intake etc. Beats not tuning it and risking running lean and having premature ejacula... I mean.. detonation... ;)

I got a cervinis ram air hood on it...i know that doesn't really help when i have the stock air box on it...suggestions for opening up the intake at the same time takng advantage of the hood?

When you say a dyno tune isn't all that expensive...can you be more specific...

I do have a superchips tuner for it...options include; performance (high octane gas), towing, low octane performance...

2000 Dakota with the 5.9 if anyone needed to be reminded...

since you have a programmer, you could toy with it and see what you can get out of it. the ram air hood is only for looks or under-hood venitilation. it will not help your performance unless the ram-air ports are plumbed directly into the airbox.

a good airtube/filter assembly would be a good option.

I've always wanted to plumb the hood right into the intake...any tips/suggestions/kits for that project?

After I realize that plumbing job isn't worth it...is a KN/Air Raid/Volant CAI kit really that much better than an el cheapo off of ebay?

yea. get the name brands.. unless you are gonna do it completely yourself and shave off $100, dont bother.
