Since I parted with my T.J. back in August, I've been thinking of buying a Y.J. and doing some work to it, just to have another jeep. I would love to buy another T.J. but since this will be a second vehicle and not replace my dd, and I am a jobless college student, I don't really want to spend the money it would take to build a T.J. like my old one. Anyway... if any of you guys have pics of a really clean looking Y.J., post them up along with breif details of what all you have done to it.
Thanks,
Cooper

That does look good doc, maybe I sould have been a little more specific... If I buy one it's gonna be built by my father and I, I'm thinking around 6" of lift and 35's... something along those lines.
And thanks for the link Ohio.

I think it would be a good idea to start with a YJ instead of a TJ. Most parts are cheaper to come by and you can say you have an "original" wrangler! :)

With a little searching you can find some prettty clean looking YJ's out there, some stock and some just plain crazy, like the one Doc just showed.

In fact, you can find some really awesome built rigs for rather cheap. It's amazing the price some of them go for.

You will have to ask tinknocker about the build up.. I can't remember it all, but here is our YJ:

And just so mine doesn't feel left out, here is my puny TJ (hopefully to get bigger soon!)

I've had my latest YJ for over 7 years now....Been working on it for quite a while. Upgrade stuff when it breaks. Been a great Jeep - I've had alot of fun working on it and wheeling it.

Latest poser shot

4.5" RE springs, 1" body lift running 35's
Rear D44 with an ARB
Alot of other stuff I've added over the years.....

I do wheel it - I just keep out of the mud.....Rocks are more fun.

Strongwind, could you tell me where that 2nd pic in the rocks was taken. I'll be living in houston for awhile and would like to do some wheeling on rocks.
Back on topic..... I would post pics of my YJ but I'm postin this from my phone since I don't have internet yet.

Thanks - I made the bumper myself a few years ago - added the stinger this past September. Got a buddy with a tubing bender/notcher - decide to play around with it one weekend.

Here's a link to the post I put up after I completed the project. A few more pics ...

We did the Jeep Jamboree/Texas Spur in Llano, Texas earlier this year. About 4 hours west of Houston/northwest of Austin. We wheeled on Inks Ranch - it's only open for wheeling during Jeep Jamboree.

Another nice place for rocks about an hour west of Llano is Katemcy Rocks in Mason - we are making a run out there this weekend. Like Inks Ranch - alot of granite.....

I will post up pics when I get home tonight. No need for a 6" lift for 35's. I'm running around a 3" lift and fit 35's nicely.

Ok here are some pics of my rig. I have a lot done to it and don't want to bore you with everything but for the suspension and drivetrain I have the following. 4.6L stroker, NV3550, NP231 w/SYE (soon to be flipped, clocked, 4:1ed, twin sticked, HD output Dana 300), 8.8 rear with Super 88 kit and Detroit locker, HP Dana 30 front, 4.56 gears, 3.5" BDS lift (probably settled to about 3" now), custom length shocks front and rear, front flat fenders, TJ rear flares, Mickey Thompson Classic II wheels with Staun Internal Beadlocks and 35x12.5 Trxus MT's. Everything performs really well both on and off road. I'm actually thinking about highlining everything and dropping to a 2" spring after the 35's wear out and going to 37's but we will see. Ok enough jibber jabber, here are some pics.

I just repainted the hardtop a few shades darker than before so this is the first time I had it on the YJ. I think it compliments the green very well.

Thanks man, thats definately a sharp lookin jeep, I'm thinkin Im gonna go with 6in of lift, I had 4 on my tj, but since this is just gonna be a weekend toy/ trail rig I want to go with a little more this time.
Of course this is all still in theory, because I'm still surfin auto trader tryin to find a clean one at a reasonable price, I'm not gonna rush though, I'm just gonna wait till I find exactly what I want. I'd like to be started on it by Christmas, but we'll see...
Thanks for the pics guys.

I'm looking for a car right now I'll keep my eyes out for you. Any color in particular? Why not do just a SOA instead of gargantuan (sp?) springs with crazy arch. Remember leaf springs aren't coil springs the further you go up in leaf springs the more arch you get=bumpy ride and crappy flex. If starting over I'd do SOA on either stock or very near stock springs.

I'd disagree.

I'm running RE 4.5" extreme duty springs (SUA) with a 1" body lift.
No problems clearing 35's with a little work on the fenders (TJ cut). Keep the COG low.
And of the 3 sets of springs I've had on the Jeep in 7 years, the RE's are great - wish I had them from day 1....
On road ride quality is awesome (I usually drive my Jeep when we make runs - that's on the highway for 4 to 6 hours at 65 MPH...) and the flex is pretty good.

http://www.cypressoffroad.com/gallery/6_21_04_08_9_48_17_4.jpg

A properly set up SUA will work well - make sure the shocks are long enough to allow the springs to droop. I've seen a few cases where the shocks limit droop....

SOA creates alot of other issues you need to address....Steering, wrap bar.....

Everything you said was very true, and you're right the SOA requires WAY more modifications than most expect or even know. But, i think 4bob4 was trying to say that 6" leaves aren't going to necessarily run smooth, or have the nice ride quality your 4.5" RE does. If he can spend the extra dollar included with SOA than he could have a nicely set-up suspension system with close to stock like steering, great flex, etc...
Done properly that is...

To be honest that's one thing I am worried about going with a Y.J., I would really rather have the coil spring set up...
I'm still on the fence between Y.J. and T.J., no rush though....
I'm sure the T.J. vs Y.J. debate has been hacked over several hundred times, but I'm still unsure.

That would be the least of my concerns with a YJ. There's nothing wrong with leaf springs. Sure they might ride a bit rougher, but it's a Jeep, not a German engineered... well it's not a Cadillac. As far as flex, nothing to worry about there either, leaves can be made to flex great, as has all ready been shown. A leaf spring setup is also simpler to lift, as there are no control arms or trac bars. And there's that whole D35 rear problem you can't get away from without an axle swap.
The biggest concern I had buying a YJ was mileage, the shotty work the PO may have done, and the abuse it have endured. Which is why I ended up with a TJ, I just didn't have the resources ($$) to deal with an older Jeep at the time.

Here's some pictures for comparison.

These are pictures of my YJ, and a long-armed TJ, both of us are running 35" tires. He is only backed on to my tire as his true-trac just wouldn't climb my tire, he's only locked in the rear.

Not Flexed the whole way but the best I could do in this spot.
