A guy on a local jeep forum has his jeep for sale, he may part it out and if he does Ive got first dibs on his 8.8.
He wasnts $800 for it if he parts it out. Good news is that its already got an Aussie locker in it and 4.10 gear ratio, RE brackets, disk breaks and new break pads. On top of the $800 he wants a stock axle thrown in for a trade too. I dont have a problem throwing my axle in plus some cash but 800 seems a little high to me? What do you guys think?
He has 23 spline 231 transfer case with a PORC sye kit, cv driveshaft and 8.8 flange adapter kit for another $525 and he wants the stock transfer case in trade. Again I dont have a problem trading my stock parts off but it just seems a little too much money plus the parts.
Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Yea thats pretty high. I cant say anything about the 8.8 cause i got mine for free but our junkyard sells em for $300. So think of it this way:
Stock 8.8-$300
Aussie -$260
Brackets -$150??? ...mine were $20 but ive got leaf springs
Labor -$200 is what my guy usually charges
So thats $900 for a locked, bolt-in 8.8 which makes his asking price somewhat plausable but then he wants you to trade your old rearend on top of the cash? I wouldnt do that. Id offer the money straight up.

yeah that's seems high to me as well if he's asking for the stock parts in exchange. Maybe try to get a junkyard price on your stock parts and see if he'd knock that off his asking price?

Seems high to me as well, sounds like he wants to get every bit of the money he has tied up in those parts back out of them, and then on top of that he's taking your stock parts so he can still sell the Jeep.
I wouldn't pay it, but as mentioned that's roughly what it would cost for someone else to build it. If you do it yourself it would be cheaper.
I got robbed. In NM... I paid $800 for a take out 8.8 with 3.73s and no work done. Did all the grinding and prep work myself. But, did buy the brackets from M.O.R.E. and paid an additional $200.00 to install. Then, had to have custom brake lines made for the new disk brakes I also had to buy for my 8.8.
So, in my area... $800.00 plus an old POS I'm not gonna re-use anyways would be a good deal. In your area... maybe not so much...

Yeah if he doesnt sell it he will part it out try to get it back to stock and then try to sell it again. Its ready to slap into my jeep, locked and same gear ratio so with all that said it doesnt seem too bad its that I just give away my axle. Not that its really worth much anyhow
Your stock axle ain't worth ****.
Sorry... I threw mine away...

If he came down on the price I would say it's worth it, seems to have everything you are going to buy anyways. I'd say it's pretty high, so offer lower and see where that gets ya.
You could try selling the Dana turdyfive, but who in their right mind would buy it?

I know the 35 is worth basically nothing but if Im giving it to him...I think he could come down on the price a little

I got mine for $275 with discs. An Aussie isn't the best locker to put in an 8.8, so are you really getting a good deal?
I plan on running a Detroit after the recommendations of the wizards of this board once I get mine swapped in.
Personally, I think I would look around a bit unless you can afford the $800 and don't want anymore hassle.

Why is an Aussie not ideal? Because its an automatic locker? Selectables like Detroits easier on parts?

Detroits aren't selectable, they are automatic lockers as well, same exact thing as a Aussie, essentially, just in a stronger case.
I'm guessing he says that because the 8.8s weakest point is probably the stock open carrier, and honestly it could be stronger. However that being said, I have a insertable in mine, its a Lock-Right, but similar to an Aussie, its been in there for 3 years now, never a problem. A Detroit would eliminate the "weak" carrier issue.
I inquired about an 8.8 about a month ago and was told it would be $300 (disc brakes, 4.11, etc)
Just this weekend, another guy said he'd sell me one for $350 (disc brakes, 4.88s, etc.)
Mark me down for being in the "$800 + parts is too high" category.

Exactly. If I am putting that much money into building it, I am definately going to eliminate all the weak points that I can.
