As sad and terrible as that is, it doesnt surprise me in the least. People are nuts this time of year, I saw a couple fights in the line at Walmart this morning.

I worked at Best Buy a few years back, and people not only were racing each other to things, but getting in fights, even among family members!
Besides anyone who works retail knows the best deals are after christmas...which is why I always ask for money and gift cards!
Is the XBox 360 really worth it? Geez people...

Just saw on the Clinton News Network that there was a shooting at a Toys R' Us. It seems that I will be shopping from Amazon for the nieces and nephews.

Having seen the idiocy on TV in the cities, I thought no way it could be bad here in south WV...so I betook me to Walmart in Lewisburg at 5 AM this morning looking for an HDTV...No parking left at 5 AM! I finally parked in an adjoining restaraunt lot and walked to the store. In about 10 minutes I had progressed about 30 feet into the store. I have never seen anything like it! People had little babies and toddlers in that crazy crowd...And if you tried to edge past them, they glared at you like you had done something to them. It took me about 5 minutes to get the hell out of that glasseyed parade. Never again! People are so stupid.

The only time I actually go shopping is in the middle of the week mid morning and never during any holiday sales. I will pay the extra $ for my own peace.

Yes , you do . You are not the "good consumer citizen" .
You will be hereafter relegated to shoping at BillyBobMart during " off-peak " hours when there are actually a couple of open parking spaces , in semi close proximity to a door that is not shutdown at 10 PM for security purposes .
There will stil be teaming hordes inside the store , backed up behind the 1 register still open , ( saving electricity ?....) .;)
I shop mostly online , and have done so for years .
I only go to the mall , or , large retail outlets , when I have an emergency , or , time to kill and evil malice in my heart .
Here's a holiday passtime for those with an anti-social bent :
Go to any entrance of your mall of choice , and , lurk there with a bag or 2 in your hand .
Observe the # of folks circling for a parking space .
When there is a peak , calmly stroll through the parking lot with your keys in 1 hand .
1 of those parking space " vultures " is sure to spot you , and will slowly follow you in the hopes of getting your parking space .
Lead them as far as you want , then suddenly run many rows over . :D
Happy freakin" holidays ....

up to a few years ago, it was fun to go the the stores at 5am and shop. most of the time I was done about 8am just as the crowds were starting to show up. I would go to Sears at about 5:15 get the tools I want and head to the jewelery counter and pay there. I would walk past all the fools standing in the tool checkouts as I left the store abou 30 min later. now I usually take the following monday off and do my shopping then.

I'm an ornery old coot and I know it. But I like me better than anyone I ever met.

What is wrong with people these days? For one, you could get the same deals online the day before in about 90% of the situations. I think people just like the missery sometimes?

From what I have read in different articles and from what I have been hearing, the crowd was pushing on the doors that were locked as if the store will open sooner than scheduled.... The merchants should start looking at this mind set and stop opening stores at these ridiculous hours and not advertise any early bird specials. When shoppers do not leave a store when it is closed due to a death your shoppers caused, you just wonder about society. They deserved to be drawn on. I hope the contributing perpetrators are caught and prosecuted.

I agree Tonka..the merchants bring this feeding freenzy upon themselves and thus should be liable..put a stop to the freenzy, then all should remain calm as if it were just another day.
Many of us here know how crazy Black Friday gets as has been stated by many here, that those of us who are SMART will choose not to partake in a black friday freenzy, thus by doing so, we all have minimized our risks by not going..those who choose to go, assume the risks..

This just reminds me of the mayhem brought on by the Cabbage Patch doll craze. I thought it was insanity then as well as now.

Not that the merchant should not be held legally liable... After this incident, they better be more aware to how people will react when you put up special sales and open earlier than normal the weekend after Thanksgiving (I am further perplexed when normal store hours the rest of the year are no earlier than 10 am which is a late opening for me). Retailers should have a pact to open no earlier than 8 am. If this practice continues, they will have learned nothing.
