it's definitly fun, i usually park in the parking stall half full of plowed snow. When it comes to driving, it's totally fun but i drive pretty cautious due to the crazies driving around me, i usually end up getting passed (unless i'm first in line).

I prefer the (front wheel drive) VW in moderate depth snow. When it gets too deep and commute to and/or from work is involved, I use the Jeep. It is conditions that is best not to be out in the first place. It is not that I am not confident in the vehicle. It is conditions and other drivers that I worry about. When I was returning from skiing in years prior, all vehicles that ended up off the highway were popular models of 4X4s (some rubber side up  ). I certainly do not drive like they do in the commercials.
I have never seen any vehicle bash through snow like the advertisers do. The only time I do anything that I would not do on the road, I am in a parking lot and taking care there. I am not playing but I am studying the handling of "what will this do if I do this?". If I wanted to do recreational snow driving, I would go to Georgetown Lake and play.

my deductable is $500..was asked once if I made $500 a day..I said no..then the statement was made that why would I go out on a snowy day risking that $500 deductable..made such an impression on me that I usually stay home..boring maybe, but smart.

To properly drive your vehicle off-road you have to what its limits are, and what it's capable and not capable of. The same applies for winter driving. Just cuz ya got 4x4 doesn't mean you can go blasting through the snow and ice like a normal day. Like Doc said, it's all about stopping.
If you look out the window and it's snowing sideways, the news says it's horrible out, and mushroom clouds in the distance, probably safer to stay home or wait for a few hours...

Jeep usually stays home, My AWD Astro is the best vehicle I have ever had in the snow.

Oh I completely understand all of that, I'm just sayin' that I like the reliability of my jeep. And I am driving very cautiously when other cars are around, mainly because I'm concerned they aren't. And also when the road was slick yesterday and there were no cars around, the E-brake can be fun...

We don't get alot of snow here in Iraq...but back home in Maine we get quite a bit.I'm due to be back on the 1st of January so i won't miss the plowing season.I use my 91 YJ to plow 5 driveways in my town before i got to my normal job.I love it!My 2 daughters(ages 3 and 4) love to go with me.If i don't ask them to go they pout for hours.lol.With a good set of v-bar snow chains on front i have no problems starting and stopping while plowing, just have to take them off before my 40 mile trek to work.Haven't driven my jeep in a year and now i'm having serious withdrawls.I miss it almost as much as i miss my family. If my wife heard that she'd kill me...lol.c-ya all on the trails in a month!

The best time to go out and drive in the snow is when the DOT plow trucks wont go out

That's if you are trying to get to work with the crazies...but if it's a weekend or you have the day off..well that's another story!
Does anyone else love the giant snow piles in parking lots too?

Welcome to the forum Mainer and God Bless and Thank you for your service. I suspect the nice cool wx from Main will be a nice welcome home from the desert land.

I had fun going out on saturday night up here in CT. 2wd diesel pick-up on bald tires. Gotta get them drunk people home some how.
So I'm almost done driving people home and I get a request to go to this apartment complex well away from the main roads. this apartment complex up a 25ish degree hill that had turned into a sheet of ice from the snow/rain we were having. so i was sliding side to side trying to get up the hill. then I got stuck in the parking lot of the apartment complex... then I realized I still had to get back down the hill...
I have never wanted my jeep fixed more than that night.
