So the Sheriff just got a new toy.... Brand new Challenger, fully loaded, all the options and a 6.1 Liter Hemi. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics... mom had the cam so she could take pics of me on the ladder truck.

If you act really stupid you might get to ride in it.

They don't get to ride in those. Like Jeeps, that's a purpose built police car. After they pull you over, if they need transport... you'll find a quick response to a backup unit behind that car. ;)
No different then us using the Mustang Mach 1s and all the other Mustang police we've had in NM.

which county is that? i cant read it......
and yes. that IS bad ass. Lowndes County Sheriff Ashley Paulk was one of the first to get a Charger down here. It was a fully loaded Charger R/T. He gave it to his #2 man. They have been buying 50/50 orders of Chargers and Crown Vics since.
I knew it was only a matter of time before a big-money county bought a Challenger.

Yes it is.
Our officers have worked hard to get the drug dealers off the streets and use their money to buy a damn nice cruiser.
Thank you to all the drug dealers on the streets of Rockdale County. And thank you to the federal gov't for all the awesome lights.

Still a waste of resources. Drug money being confiscated should mean lower tax, not toys.

actually, no.
seized drug funds can only be used for certain things. they can not be used for payroll. they can not be used for certain types of equipment. many times, they Sheriff's Offices will use siezed funds to flaunt in the face of the dealers. if you want high profile, dont put a sticker on the back of a Crown Vic "Purchased with siezed drug funds".... you go out and you buy a Dodge Challenger and you stripe it. -BAM!- thats an IN YO FACE example of the kind of finds some of these agencies are getting.
I'm partly biased because I'm a cop, yes... but it is also because i see it from the inside. I wish i could see the car from the inside. As it is, Lowndes has some bad ass Dare cars. They have a super-nice H2 that I just saw this weekend... an awesome Magnum with true flames.... a couple of Dodge Ram trucks... they are putting it out there.
My agency? what have we got? nothing. the last DARE car we had was a 1992 Corvette that was seized. It was taken out of service 6 years ago because it was falling apart. Siezed drug funds can NOT be used to offset normal budgetary spending as my knowledge is concerned.

It would seem to me the money could be better spend taking a bunch of underprivledged kids to a ballgame or developing a relationship with lower income neighborhood kids showing them cops are the good guys and it doesn't have to be an "us vs. them" attitude. That would help long term rather than an "up yours" or "in yo face" attitude which serves no purpose with the drug dealers and deepens the "us vs. them" feelings in possible future drug dealers. agreed, Rockdale county does a great job. especially considering the growth spurt we have experienced in the past several years. and in my opinion we really dodged a bullet in this years election for sheriff.
I wonder if this means we will be seeing chargers now...

Ditto. All of the income from seizure we have usually goes to vehicle repair. We like to seize a drug dealers car and not flaunt it, we use it. We use your Tahoe w/22's or your Mustang GT convertable to go buy more drugs with undercover officers. As soon as the car starts getting "hot" (well recognised by drug community as an undercover agent) we auction the car (whats left of it - we have some rough times with these cars sometimes) and put the money back in the department...cycle starts over.
But NO drug money can be used to pay officers, or any type of profit fund. I.e. - your taxes wont go down if we get more money....sorry doesnt work like that.
